After a second attempt to correspond with the owner, I received this e-mail from him (Jim B.) "Linda, you've brought up the pet fee charge a second time so allow me to respond again (he never responded the first time}. You made a reservation for 5 nights for 2 adults and two dogs for a substantially reduced rate of $650, plus tax and refundable damage/security deposit, plus I waived the wifi and cable tv fee of $25. My cancellation policy clearly states that funds will be forfeited for cancellations made within 60 days of arrival. It also states that there will be a $100 processing fee for changes at any time. You elected to cancel your reservation for the dogs which was your decision, but you cancelled it. When you mentioned that you might not bring the dogs, had you asked about the fee, (it should be up to management to be informative of such policies) I would have told you that it was not refundable. I had no reason to reiterate the policy nor should it have occurred to me to do so. " My review on the Waldhein Chalet has nothing to do with the chalet, but with the owners policies. Firstly, the reduced rate was not that significant since Mr. Jim B. suggested I book through him directly rather than VRBO, saving him booking fees. Secondly, the chalet was clearly available and not booked for at least six weeks. Thirdly, I can understand a fee for changing arrival dates or cancellations as this is money out of the owners pocket. BUT, to charge for dogs that were not brought I disagree with. I have checked with a few other vacation rental properties and none charge for dogs prior to arrival. I believe it is up to the owner of the property to disclose pertinent information. BEWARE when booking of non-refundable fees.
When we found a dog sitter I e-mailed the owner about refunding the $50 pet fee as we would not be bringing the dogs as first mentioned.
